Filippo was born about 1819 in Lettopalena, Chieti, Italy, the son of Vincenzo Martinelli and Fiorenza DiPaolo.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Santa Maria Rossetti, who he married on 27 NOV 1839. The place has not been found. Their eight known children were Berardino (1837-?), Giuseppe (c1840-?), Anna Maria (1840-1853), Chiara Vita (1843-?), Ludovico (1846-1851), Vincenzo (1849-1852), Teresa Lucia (1852-1853) and Anna Maria (1857-1857).

His second wife was Maria Domenica D'Emilio, who he married on 25 MAY 1882. The place has not been found. They had no known children.
