Note 1
Notice that Mary arrived in the United States on October 25, 1912 and
was married on November 15, 1912 so she was only 16 years old. The
story, as told by her oldest daughter, Mary Mehalechko, is that she
was pledged to marry another man but when she saw him, she refused to
marry him because he was so old and ugly. She wanted to return to
Austria but didn't have any funds. The man she rejected was a friend
of John Mehalechko and John somehow volunteered to marry her. She
liked John's looks so she married him. She had many brothers and
sisters in the old country and always wanted to go home. She suffered
bouts of depression the rest of her life because she missed her
family.
