Gelsomino was born on 22 FEB 1855 in Castelpizzuto, the son of Liberato Sabatino Romano and Annantonia Romano.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Almerinda Didonato, who he married on 2 DEC 1880 in Castelpizzuto. Their two known children were Luigi Louis Sr. (1881-1981) and Rosario (1885-1978).

His second wife was Domenica Nunziata Caranci, who he married on 14 OCT 1897 in Castelpizzuto. Their eight known children were Mary Antoinetta (1898-1973), Carmen Anthony (1899-1983), Albina Tisda (1902-1993), Clementine Corinne (1906-?), George Francis (1906-1989), Sebina Elizabeth Marie (1910-?), Louise Christina (1912-?) and Albert Theodore (1914-2000).
