Nicola was born about 1784 in Pratola Peligna, L'Aquila, Italy, the son of Lonardo Colella and Maria Giuseppa d'Alessandro.
His wife was Nunzia Rosa d'Andrea, who he married in ABT 1803. The place has not been found. Their five known children were Emidio Pasquale (c1804-?), Pietro Antonio (1814-?), Liberata Antonia (1818-?), Angela Custode (1821-1824) and Rosa Maria (1821-1824).
