Donato was born about 1868 in Rocca Pia, L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy, the son of Giovanni Cioccio and Chiara Maria DiPaolo.

His wife was Guadenzia Fronzaglia, who he married in ABT 1893. The place has not been found. Their six known children were Nunzio (1898-1974), Chiarina (c1900-?), Maria Eufemia (1901-1986), Leonina (c1905-?), Giovanni (c1895-?) and Marco (1902-1931).
